WATCH OUT WORLD: Here comes the next BIG thing! Zo Carroll and THE Soul Breakers! This group of veteran musicians R&B'd the heck out of the house at The Depot in Tucson, AZ last Saturday night. West coast swing dancers cheered them on and boogied the night away. Tucson will never be the same! These guys are Fresh. They are on key, with perfect pitch, total harmony and they exhude that rare musical chemistry. Moreover, their music is consistent, clear and groovin' - which is what dancers need to create that ziggin' and zaggin', booty boppin', shakin' - rattlin' - and rollin'!
With the music of Muddy Waters, Charlie Sexton, Savoy Brown, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Ray Vaughn - who could sit? West coast swingers and bar patrons were on the dance floor all night long. What a fun Saturday night this was. Its no wonder The Depot has become such a hot little nightspot that THE Soul Breakers have been asked to headline EVERY month!
Zo is not the only one with some awesome pipes - Greg Babich on lead guitar can really put it out there too. And Clay Brown on the sax - this is some ridiculous talent. He makes the thing WAIL! I just don't get it - how have the great bands of this world managed to miss this amazing artist?
Charlie Martin is tremendous on drums. Jeff Masterson has an unbelievable presence on base. With Mal Jackson and his keyboard, its like he's playing with a child. All the guys are really good - BUT TOGETHER - these guys have a kind of magic. Like, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. When they play - when they sing - when they present themselves on the stage - its like a 4th of July fireworks display!
The Tucson West Coast Swing Club was very well represented. Our illustrious members included Harvey Dong and Zo's lovely wife Mary (club newsletter editor and excellent dancer) - are pictured on the right.
May TWCs teachers of the month: Roger Belasco and his wife Dana - who is a beautiful dancer with pristine technique - decorated the floor.
Fantastic dancers making the good times roll included: Chris Dixon, Randy Malek, Rosanne Bonomo Crago (pictured on the left with Harvey Dong), Phil Holton - and many whose names I didn't get. The guys were inspired by the music to give their very best style and technique. Its especially fun when Zo hops off the stage and joins the dancers - the guy is seriously talented! This up and coming band also stars in other nightspots in Tucson, including Famous Sam's and Boondocks. Better catch these guys soon. With their growing popularity, it won't be long before these guys are off touring the world!
The Soul Breakers will be releasing their first CD later this year. It will be a big seller in the dance community and beyond. These guys have so much charisma that they have even been asked to go to Hollywood and appear as a band singing "YMCA" in the upcoming film "Twin Brides!"
Check out their My Space page for a sample of their original music. "There Is No Way" surprised me. It is just so polished and professional. Any manager/producer out there with a clue will discover these guys before too much longer.
