Swingin' Into Spring

Swingin' Into Spring in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, is the most fun dance weekend I've ever been to! Several hundred people converged over the weekend at the Sheraton Bradley Hotel to take dance lessons, compete and dance. This event was special because the emphasis was on dancing, unlike other events in which the emphasis is on competing.

Ken Mercik had the sense to be the first event organizer to limit competitions to two hours each day of the weekend. We had wonderful lessons by the humorous Mario Robau, Angel Figueroa, John Lindo and the technical expertise of Maryann Nunez. There was a half hour of social dancing between each lesson.

The hotel was pretty crummy. There was no airconditioning in the ballroom. There was water but no cups. Most rooms were missing something - hangers, toilet paper, hair dryers, pillows (or pillows without pillow cases in made up beds)! The iron in my room leaked brown water all over my blouse. It reminded me of a truck stop motel off some forlorn freeway.

But the staff was nice and we had a lovely (free) breakfast. Many of the women sat and chatted in the breakfast nook. One woman commented that it was nice to meet other women for a change. She was right. We break the ice with leaders in lessons but we never have a chance to meet each other.

I made some wonderful new friends.
