Swing & Salsa!

You Should Be Dancing is a dance studio in mid-town Manhattan. Besides dance classes, they offer parties to the public every weekend. Their "Club 412" is the Disneyland of dance. Every party generates nothing but smiles. On the last Saturday of each month is a very hot event:
Swing & Salsa.

The lindy ballroom had live music by Wycliffe Gordon Quartet. At least 100 energetic hoppers showed up in zoot suits and crazy 1940's get-ups. Legs were flying all over the place!

In the salsa ballroom the Orlando Marin Latin Orchestra played salsa, merengue and bachata music. At least 50 people were in that room at any time - shaking their hips to that Latin beat! Local salsa celebrity teacher Franklyn Ayala (recently interviewed on Good Morning America) DJ'd during breaks.

In the west coast swing ballroom, Evan Swartz DJ'd the best in sultry rhythm & blues with a touch of very interesting contemporary to a packed room. There was a very good mix of classics and new music.

There has been a controversy about the music style for a while. Many dancers have felt that the emphasis on contemporary is off-putting. Well, I can tell you that Saturday night, every song was a dancer's inspiration and it was impossible to stop dancing!

All night people drifted in and out of the ballrooms, doing a little of this and a little of that. Everyone was very friendly. No one was shy about asking someone to dance. There were people of all ages and all backgrounds and everyone had an amazingly good time.

You Should Be Dancing is located:
412 Eighth Ave., at 31st Street in NYC
